Why I wear a Chest Rig backcountry or wilderness camping
One of the most common questions I get is: “Dude, why are you wearing a chest rig?” It’s a fair question, especially since most backcountry or wilderness backpackers don’t use one and probably never will. To be clear, I don’t always wear a chest rig on my camping trips, but there are specific situations where it becomes a valuable part of my gear.
I typically wear my chest rig on multi-day trips where I know I’ll be in remote areas, traveling off mapped trails, or moving through known grizzly country. In these scenarios, I like to stack the odds in my favor. The chest rig allows me to carry essential tools and survival items like a knife, fire starter, GPS, bear spray, and first aid supplies without needing to dig through my main backpack. It’s all about being prepared for the unexpected.
Another reason I love the chest rig is the freedom it gives me to explore. After setting up camp, I enjoy venturing out to scout the area, forage, or just take in the scenery. Having key gear on my chest means I’m always equipped even if I’m far from my primary pack and campsite. It’s not just about convenience it’s about peace of mind.
So, while a chest rig might not be for everyone, it’s a game-changer for me in certain situations. It’s lightweight, accessible, and ensures I’m ready for whatever the wilderness throws my way. Whether you’re a minimalist or a gear enthusiast, it’s worth considering how a chest rig could fit into your own backcountry strategy.
