Can I live in a simple shelter through Winter?
Winter 2019: I’ve decided to do something a little… unconventional. I’m building a log shelter by hand and living in it through an entire winter. Why? Well the answer is simple because I can.
Like most people, I spend five days a week toiling for the shekels at my job. But unlike most I won’t be heading back to the comforts of a modern home at the end of the day. Where’s the challenge in that? Plenty of people are already doing this and frankly it’s not my style.
I’ve secured a remote piece of property tucked away on a mountainside and as you can see in this video progress is well underway. There’s been a lot of tree felling, log flipping and sweat equity poured into this project. My goal is to have the basic structure buttoned up by the end of October just in time for the snow to fly.
Oh and did I mention I can’t drive up to the front door? (Mainly because there is no door yet.) A small hike is required to get from my parking spot to the shelter which should add an extra layer of adventure once Winter hits.
So join me on this journey. It’s going to be cold, challenging, and maybe a little crazy but that’s what makes it worth doing. Let’s see if I can survive the Winter in a hand-built log shack. Spoiler: It’s going to be challenging.
