Off Grid log Cabin Build – Update Snow and moving a log

Winter Has Arrived: Log Cabin Build Update

It’s official, snow has fallen and the race against winter is on! In this video, I’ll give you an update on the progress of my off-grid log cabin build. You’ll also catch a few clips of me moving a log into place on the wall and getting it securely onto the floor.

As I work through the challenges of building in colder weather, I can’t help but think about how pioneers built their log cabins entirely by hand, without the tools or technology we have today. Here are a few fascinating historical facts about their methods:

  • Hand-Cut Logs: Pioneers felled trees using axes and hand saws, then carefully notched each log to fit snugly with the ones below.
  • No Nails or Screws: Instead of metal fasteners, they used wooden pegs and precise joinery to hold the structure together.
  • Natural Insulation: Gaps between logs were filled with materials like mud, moss, or clay a technique known as chinking to keep the elements out.
  • Team Effort: Building a cabin was often a community effort, with neighbors coming together to raise the walls and share the workload.

While I’m fortunate to have modern tools and equipment, the spirit of hard work and perseverance remains the same. Join me as I continue this journey, blending old-world craftsmanship with modern ingenuity to create my off-grid retreat.
