Living off grid – Sub Zero temps and Chimney Fires
Never a dull day around here… well, almost never. Recently I had a bit of excitement when I discovered a chimney fire just as I was about to leave my cabin for the day. Talk about timing!
Chimney fires happen when creosote a highly flammable byproduct of burning wood builds up inside the chimney. If it gets hot enough, it can ignite turning your cozy cabin into a potential hazard. To stop it you have to cut off the fire’s oxygen supply. In my case that meant blasting dry powder into the burn box and hoping for the best.
Let me tell you, dry powder is messy. It took me days to clean up the aftermath inside the cabin. But hey, it beats the alternative!
Lesson learned: regular chimney maintenance is a must!
