Off grid living – Building the Winter Survival Cabin

Winter has finally arrived and I’m thrilled to say I finished the Winter survival cabin just in the nick of time. This little project began about three months ago and while I could only dedicate weekends to it, what started as a simple structure ended up taking longer than expected.

The cabin is tucked away in a remote spot no roads lead directly to it. An old logging skidway gets me close, but from there, it’s all on foot. Once the snow blankets the area the only way in or out is by snowmobile or snowshoe. The nearest town? A cool 30 miles away. It’s the perfect escape for someone like me.

Now, this isn’t my first time building something off grid but I’ll admit, timber framing was a new challenge. I’m more accustomed to working with logs and tarps. Still, I am happy how the cabin has turned out.

So what’s the plan for the Winter? I’ll be living like a modern-day hermit, embracing the solitude and simplicity of life in the wilderness. And yes, maybe I’ll conduct a few “evil experiments” on the local wildlife, don’t worry, nothing too sinister, just observing and learning from nature in its purest form.

There’s something deeply satisfying about living this way. It keeps life simple, grounded, and real. I feel the earth beneath my feet, notice the subtle details so many people overlook, and truly connect with the world around me. Life is good when you strip away the noise and focus on what matters.

Here’s to a Winter of quiet moments, wild adventures, and the beauty of living deliberately.
